It has become obvious that in America, the single circumstance that does dampen your future is not a handicap, drug addiction, or disability, but believe it or not, being a single mum. Single mothers can be put in this category through divorce, death, or by choice, nevertheless these are not the main reasons why a lone mother cannot improve her career status. The main reason for this is because of an elementary bias and bigotry in American business that strips away single mums rights, and brazenly discriminates against them.

The majority of single mums who work long hours are too tired to take note this trend, but now this is starting to be a big element in the fight for single mums rights. Our present day society requires that in order to succeed we have to play the corporate game, seek out career opportunities, demand better pay so that we can put our children into better educational institutions. However, if you are a single mum this is not going to happen.

Being a single mother, the impression is that you will be a business liability, and in many states, it is fair to ask for the marital status of a job applicant, and find out the number of children there are. Business owners claim this lets them refuse to hire single mothers, and therefore avoid paying health care expenses for their dependents. Or, if they do happen to hire them, to deliberately pay them a lower rate to account for perceived health care expenses. But, because it is allowable by law, this is not regarded as being discriminatory. That this form of discrimination is allowed to be practiced in the United States has many single mums disappointed with the system.

There are lots of single mums trying furiously to get a job, but employers are absolutely pitched against them. Lots of single moms work over 40 hours a week to support their young ones, with barely any help from the government or departed dads. Yet, they are given less money than single or married women, that is, if they can find work. They have minimal support and have to engage someone to look after the children while they are at work. If they have an accident, the situation becomes desperate, both in terms of income and child minding.

The government census return showed that over 10 million unmarried mothers live in America. Plenty of these single mothers are starting to band together in local organizations to support the fight for single mums rights. Child care centers, financial and social services are a few of the good points about being in one of these groups. A lot of single mums are pleading with their public officials to revoke laws that make it legal to inquire into a persons personal affairs. There are grass roots movements of single mums in nearly every community across the country that are fighting for single mums rights, so that all single mothers like themselves, will find justice in the workplace.
