The essential commands to teach your dog are stay, sit and come. The relationship between you and your dog will revolve around these three commands for life. Any time that you and your dog are in public it's an embarrassment for him to be running wildly in the street, you would be more pleased to present him as the perfect animal that you think he is.

Treats are an easy method to teach your dog obedience; you can give him a treat when he does what you tell him or If he refuses to obey then he misses out on a treat. Don't shout at your dog as it will make him fearful of you and you don't want that, you wish to encourage a close relationship with him. Dogs can be man's best friend, if you let them.

When doing your basic dog training try and carry out the lessons away from any distractions like his toys or play things. Take him to an empty field or park where you will be able to train your dog without any interruptions. First of all get your dog's attention and give him the sit command, then take your hand and place it on his back and gently guide his bottom down, when he is in the sitting position make a fuss of him by patting him, then give him a biscuit or what ever treats you have brought along to reward him with.

If you keep repeating this lesson, your dog will obey your order and sit, because he realizes that by doing what he is told he will be compensated and also because he can tell that you are delighted with his efforts. Ultimately your dog will heed you as a matter of course, and the treats will no longer be necessary.

Newborn puppies are really quiet innocent and need to be loved and taught how to behave. You can teach your dog from any age but young puppies are easier to train as an old dog may just not have the incentive to learn.
